In New York just walking the street
Ran out of money had to eat
I at the Plaza, that fancy hotel
Where you can check in if well to do well...
The first of July and a and four
I at the Plaza's front revolving door
I in the door and went around for a ride
Treatin' myself to the air inside
Then I found myself in a chandeliered
Where were dining and I hid in the gloom
My hunger hurt 'til I thought I would break
When a waiter out a big strawberry cake

Oh that cake
Oh that cake
Out in California them berries were
And into this city them berries were
For making strawberry cake

Then I thought of Oxnard, just of LA
Where I picked for many a day
Hard with no future for the harvest was done
And I headed eastward by thumb
And nobody wanted me here in town
I like a stray dog they all kick around
berries reminded me of my bad breaks
I'm hungry and I want that strawberry

I deserve strawberry cake
Deserve that strawberry
I ran and I it then out the side door
Into Park through the bushes I tore
Holdin' my cake

I look behind me and what do I see
The chef and and the matre d
I had a nice helpin' of as I ran
I gobble them berries as as I can
They're the gap as I slowed down to eat
But the cake a new surge of power to my feet
I hid in the bush when the lead I did
And I quietly finished my cake

I ate all that strawberry
That fine fancy strawberry
Someone at the plaza is without
But for the time in days now my belly don't hurt
I'm full of cake
