Now this is a true story for the part
occurred on the top floor of this
Bigwig record executive's office in Nashville,
Now understand I'm not poking any fun or anybody
God knows I love country with all my heart and soul
And I the Grand Ole Opry
But I do a problem with someone who
Can't even a D chord on a guitar
Telling someone with a that they won't get far
So this is dedicated to all those underdogs like me
Out there running
Don't get if you have a dream
Don't be afraid to chase it
It's how it

He said, "Son, get offended by what I'm about to say
I can see you a passion
For the you write and play
But you lack what we all call commercial
And you just don't have it takes
To make it in Nashville"

Well my heart like a train wreck
But I wore a on my face
I said, "Thank you for time, sir"
Put my guitar back in its
Our little was like a revelation
Redirecting my
'Cause God I'd never sell my soul to rock 'n' roll
Or rap or wear those skinny jeans

'Cause you know I'd rather sing my own
be a puppet on a string
I'll what I want to wear
I'm gonna sing I wanna sing
Heaven knows all I
Is my faith, my fans, my and my family
Besides I'd rather be an old post in Texas
Than the king of

So I loaded up my old truck
And I drove back to Amarillo
Got a gig off old 66
At ballroom called The Armadillo
And for the first thousand or so
Not a showed up
I thought about every other day
But I kept on kicking that cup

Yeah, I kept kicking that can by
Blood, sweat, and
And wouldn't you know I became an overnight
In just over ten
And now I'm packing out all the dance
And the rodeos night
I got a wife, a ranch, a band, a bus, a boat
I'd say I'm doing

And you know I'd rather my own songs
Than be a puppet on a
wear what I want to wear
I'm gonna sing what I sing
Heaven all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my friends and my
I'd rather be an old fence post in Texas
Than the of Tennessee

Oh, how 'bout a little front picking, boys

Well, you know that old record man
up one night at this honky tonking bar
After my he said,
"Son, I believe you might be the big country star"
He said, "We how you keep it raw
We like how you keeping it
And I you may just have what
We all like to commercial appeal"
Huh, ain't something
Well, sir

I'd rather sing my own
be a puppet on a string
I'll what I want to wear
And I'm sing what I wanna sing
knows all I need
Is my faith, my fans, my and my family
Besides I'd be an old fence post in Texas
Than the king of
God bless
But I'd rather be just an old fence post in
Than sell my soul to 'n' roll
Or rap or those tight skinny jeans
